With 230 acres of unspoiled land, Bayonet Farm, the site of Holmdel’s 7th Annual Arts & Music Festival, is one of Monmouth County’s best kept secrets.  The farm is located at 41 Middletown Road.  For years Bayonet Farm was the country estate of Laura Harding.  In 1985 Holmdel Township purchased the farm from Miss Harding as part of its Open Space initiative.  Since then its rustic landscape and two large barns have inspired numerous artists to paint “En Plein Air”, a style of painting that originated in France which means “in open air.”

At the festival several artists will be displaying their artwork in the Red Barn Gallery, while others will be painting “En Plein Air.” As you stroll around the grounds you will be able to experience the artistic process unfold.  You just might get inspired to pick up a paintbrush!  For those of you that have a true love for art, be sure to be on hand for the judging of the two art competitions featured at the festival, the Juried and Plein Air. Judging these competitions will be two prominent art experts, James Yarosh, a local art dealer whose gallery is nationally recognized for representing Russian Plein Air Artists, and Peter Trippi, editor of “Fine Art Connoisseur”, a premier fine art publication.   While the judges view the art on exhibit for the winning prizes, festival goers will have the opportunity to browse through the Red Barn Gallery which will be featuring a variety of artistic styles to choose from.  You may just find the perfect piece of artwork to purchase for your collection.

The festival’s musical line-up is as diverse as its visual artists.  This year the Gray Barn will be host to a number of musical performances including the Colts Neck Swing Bank, Rock & Roll Chorus, Jazzfunktion and Los Mas Valientes Latin Jazz Ensemble.   Returning favorites will be the Celadon Youth Group performing Chinese songs and opera, the Kimisis GOYA Dance Troupe dancing traditional Greek dances and student actors from Holmdel High School, all ready to dazzle their audiences.

Other activities will include artists demonstrating their crafts, such as, potters Mark Walnock and Katie Stone with raku and the pottery wheel. Children will be able to enjoy a kid’s concert performed by Yosi, an award-winning recording artist and performer, as well as Doodle Dude a local cartoonist.  And as always, festival goers can participate in decorating the community mural which has become a festival tradition.

The festival is sponsored by the Bayonet Farm Advisory Committee and the Holmdel Department of Parks and Recreation.  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor of this exciting event, please e-mail Sue Emer at

This program is made possible in part by the Monmouth County Arts Council through funding from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the County Historical Commission, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.
