A spur-of-the-moment trip to Tel Aviv became available, so my first stop was the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. There, I took in a very eclectic permanent collection and was also thrilled to see the works of the artist, Elie Shamir, who was currently exhibiting a solo show of his paintings titled "Valley -On The Road to Kfar Yehoshua." I purchased his book in hopes to learn more about the artist http://english.elieshamir.co.il. The next day, I took a trip to Jerusalem, to the Western Wall and many other historic sites, including the site of the Last Supper, the stations of the cross, and the view from Mount Olive. I also was very moved by the Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem.

This monument was outside the children's memorial and was dedicated to Janusz Korczak. He became the children's doctor of the orphans of the Warsaw Ghetto. Ultimately when the Nazi liquidation ordered his famous orphanage evacuated and Korczak was forced to gather together the almost two hundred children in his care to leave for the camps. It was there he led them with quiet dignity on that final march to execution. He was offered sanctuary for himself, but refused it as he would not let the children die alone without his care til the very end.

This was the most upsetting memorial for me at the Yad Vashem.
