Artist’s statement - Tim Burke |
Artist’s statement:
"Shadow Catcher" That’s what the American Indians called Edward Curtis and other early photographers who turned up in their villages to document their lifestyles. Some believed that the photograph stole their souls and, like today’s Amish, did not welcome the intrusion.
There is something other-worldly about shadows and photos. The camera allows the artist to capture something that is both there and not there, as with the images in this show: clam shells gathered on a beach, superimposed by my own shadow as I snapped the picture—thus recreating outdoors what happens in the camera as an object blocks light streaming in through the lens. So, in a way, my shadow portraits are negatives of my various selves as I try to make something eye-catching out of the detritus around me.
I like to work with things I find. I learned about that from studying Picasso, who could turn anything into art, and from Warhol, who revolutionized filmmaking, particularly, by using the most inappropriate lighting, scripts, sound, and actors to upend convention and make us see things in a new way.
Maybe that’s my goal: I want you to do a double-take when you notice something I’ve made, and I hope you will wonder, just for a moment, what exactly you are looking at and how it was done. And maybe then, if I’ve succeeded, you’ll realize you’ve never seen that before.
