SP, "Roses," 9 1/2in x 10 1/2in, oil on canvas

Sergay Nikolichvitch Ponomarev is a Surikov Professor who teaches the first 2 years of painting. This man is very, very shy. He rarely shows his works to anyone. He has paintings in the Tretyakov Gallery (Russians feel that the Tretyakov Gallery is their greatest museum). He rarely allows any gallery or expositions in Russia to show his works but with much coaxing over a number of days, arrangements were made to show some of his works to Russian Art historian John Wurdeman. John met him at the Surikov Institute where he had his paintings in a cardboard folder. He said not to tell any one that he would have his works with him. He said he would meet in an automobile only. He would not allow John's adult translator to accompany him but did allow a young student from a different school to translate for him. He only showed John his magnificent tempura paintings and told him that on his next visit to Moscow that he may show him his oil paintings. John Wurdeman's impression of Ponomarev is that he is a very gentle and caring soul with extreme humility and great talent. He refused at this time to provide John a biography except the year he was born. He only learned he had paintings in the Tretyakov Gallery (Museum) from a book of paintings that showed two of his remarkable works.
